GEOFFREY HEIM: The average DUI case will take anywhere from four months to a year to finish, depending upon the judge. A DUI case has two components. The first is the Department of Motor Vehicles hearing. That hearing is the hearing that is going to determine whether you lose your license and if you lose your license when you can get it back. That hearing must be requested within seven days from the date you received notice that the Department of Motor Vehicle wants to take your driver's license. If you don't respond to that notice and request a hearing, you will lose your driver's license.

The second part of the DUI case is the court case. And that court case deals with the criminal punishments a judge can impose. And on even a first-time DUI that can be up to a year in the county jail, up to $1,000 fine, at least 48 hours of community service and 12 points against your driver's privilege.
